"Wary" - painted in the studio July 2007
Day 1

Remember this little piece? It was one of my daily paintings on May 25. Well, I've decided to paint a larger version of it with a wary Indian taking his horse for a little water. Using this piece and my original photo reference, I'm all set for my background reference. I was able to shoot a nice horse in a nearby field and once again I imposed upon my son, Ian to pose for the Indian.

I begin as usual, with a burnt-orange underpainting and then I sketch in everything with a small brush dipped in Turpenoid. I spend most of my hour and a half on this, getting my drawing right.
Day 2
I put my little painting right on the canvas with me to have something to compare my values to and then get to work.
Day 3
Unfortunately, I didn't pay much attention when I snapped this shot, so it's a little washed- out, but here's my third morning's progress...more to come.
I thought you might like to see the rest of my reference for this painting. To the left is the pencil sketch I did of my son - all "Indian-ed" up that is sitting on the horse I shot in the nearby field.

Above is this sketch with a little color added scanned and pasted in on the horse.
Day 4
I can't stand it any longer, I have to start painting the Indian...this is what I got done this morning.
Days 5 & 6
I make a few changes to the Indian, then I paint in the horse, making him a Paint, the favorite horse of the Indians...to the left you can see details of both. I'm not quite done with either, but you can get the gist. Tomorrow I'll paint the water and be close to being finished.
Day 7
Today I paint in the water and am getting really close to finishing...
