"Sunflowers" - painted in the studio November 2007
1.) In this painting, I utilize some pewter that I got from my grandmother. I wanted to paint it in subdued lighting and since the peweter coffee pot and creamer are pretty dark, I felt they could do with something bright, like sunflowers...I start this as I typically do, quickly washing in an under-tone and then sketching right into it.
2.) Next, I work dark to light so I quickly lay-in my background...
3.) Next, I go right to work on the flowers, laying in first the dark tones, then the light. Once I've established my two basic values in the flowers and the foliage, I go back and add a few accents (the really dark small parts), as well as a few subtle highlights.
